TCWF Newsletter Gets a New Look

The Fall 1999 issue of Portfolio marks the debut of a new look and new name for TCWF’s newsletter. The new design is part of the Foundation’s commitment to communicate effectively with grantees, grantseekers, foundation representatives, health professionals, news media, policymakers and opinion leaders about its grantmaking activities. Comments about the newsletter are always welcome and should be directed to Roni Cleland, editor.

Roundtable Focuses on Pregnancy Prevention

As part of the “Get Real! About Teen Pregnancy” public education campaign, a roundtable was held at the Fox Hills Mall Community Center in Los Angeles on May 25 for community residents. Panelists included Dr. William Hayling of Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, Ronald F. Johnson of the National Family Life and Education Center in Culver City, D’Ann Morris of the South Central Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program and Bobby Ann Howe, talk show host from KTYM radio. A similar event is being held in Oakland in October. The public education campaign is funded by a grant from TCWF to Deen & Black Public Relations.

1999 Work and Health Survey Results Released

The University of California, San Francisco, recently released its results from the 1999 California Work and Health Survey. Funded by a grant from TCWF, the three-year survey is conducted annually (1998-2000) by The Field Institute. Survey topics include many aspects of the changing nature of work in California and its relationship to health and wellness. This year’s respondents included 913 people who participated in the 1998 survey and 1,131 new respondents. The 1998 and 1999 findings and data sets can be found on the Internet at http://medicine.ucsf.edu/ programs/cwhs/.

TCWF Sets Future Priority Areas

Beginning in the year 2001, the Foundation will focus on a total of eight priority areas: Diversity in the Health Professions, Environmental Health, Healthy Aging, Mental Health, Teenage Pregnancy Prevention, Violence Prevention, Women's Health, and Work and Health. This decision was made by TCWF's board of directors as part of an ongoing strategic planning process. For a list of the Foundation's current priority areas, please see page twelve.

KGTV Launches Access to Healthcare Campaign

TCWF joined the Alliance Healthcare Foundation in funding San Diego’s ABC affiliate, KGTV, to present an awareness campaign about access to health care for low- and moderate-income families. The campaign kicked off on September 2 with a documentary and a hotline to answer questions. Public service announcements will continue to run through the end of December. Information on the campaign can also be found on KGTV’s website at www.kgtv.com.

Kudos

Gary Yates, president and CEO, was appointed to the board of directors of the Council on Foundations at its annual meeting in April.

Fran Jemmott, senior program officer, was recently appointed to the board of directors of the Liberty Hill Foundation, an organization in Santa Monica that makes grants to social, environmental and economic justice projects.

Julio Marcial’s position has been reclassified from communications assistant to communications associate.

Correction

The South Central Family Health Center received funding for an immunization project from Kaiser Permanente, not from the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation as reported on page 7 of TCWF’s Summer 1999 Newsletter.
