Three TCWF Employees Receive New Job Titles

t.gif (136 bytes)transparent.gif (51 bytes)hree staff members recently assumed new positions at the Foundation. Tawnya N. Lewis was appointed to the position of program officer, and Herman Carrera and Jonathan "Mac" Macaranas were promoted to senior program assistants.

"All three of these employees have demonstrated a sustained commitment to the mission of the Foundation and have performed high-quality work to further the goals of our grantmaking programs," said Gary Yates, president and CEO.

Tawnya N. Lewis joined TCWF in February 1996 as a program assistant for the Violence Prevention priority area. As a program officer, she will work with Program Officer Michael Balaoing to manage the 10-year, $60 million Violence Prevention grantmaking program. Lewis has also worked with safety-net health providers as an intern at the Community Clinics Association of Los Angeles County, where she developed legislative profiles and conducted surveys on government funding, health plan subcontracting methods and prenatal services. Lewis’ volunteer experience includes working with the Holton Juvenile Detention Center for Boys and with the Venice Community Clinic. A graduate of California State University, Dominguez Hills, she holds a bachelor’s degree from the School of Management with a concentration in health.

 

Herman Carrera joined TCWF in June 1996 as a program assistant for the Work and Health priority area. As a senior program assistant, he will continue to provide administrative and programmatic support for the Work and Health grantmaking program. Prior to joining the Foundation, Carrera was an office manager for Salgado and Associates, a consulting firm in San Francisco. He has also held the positions of assistant manager for Check-X-Change and executive assistant for D’Gari Enterprises, both in Seattle, Washington. Carrera holds a certificate in office management/accounting from Texas State Technical Institute.

 

Jonathan "Mac" Macaranas joined TCWF in April 1996 as a program assistant for the Community Health priority area. As a senior program assistant, he will continue to provide administrative and programmatic support to the Community Health grantmaking program. Prior to joining the Foundation, Macaranas was an engineering technician for Walter Dorwin Teague Associates, Inc., an engineering firm in Oxnard, California. Macaranas has also served in the U.S. Navy, first on active duty and then with the ready reserve, from 1989 to 1998. A graduate of Pepperdine University, Macaranas holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration.


TCWF Receives Recognition

At its 51st annual conference in Los Angeles in May, the Council on Foundations presented TCWF with two Wilmer Shields Rich Communications Awards. TCWF received a second-place silver award for its website and a third-place bronze award for the "Get Real! About Teen Pregnancy" public information campaign, funded by a grant to Deen+Black.

TCWF Prepares for Future Priority Areas

Beginning in 2001, the Foundation will focus on a total of eight priority areas: Diversity in the Health Professions, Environmental Health, Healthy Aging, Mental Health, Teenage Pregnancy Prevention, Violence Prevention, Women’s Health and Work and Health. These areas will include the following five cross-cutting themes: underserved populations, sustainability, public policy, leadership and youth. Planning for these grantmaking programs is underway, and formal grant application guidelines are expected to be released in spring 2001.

Kudos

Michael Balaoing, program officer, was named chairperson of the Public Policy Advisory Committee of the Council on Foundations and as co-chairperson of the Southern California chapter of Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy for 2000-01.

Tom David, executive vice president, was elected chairperson of Northern California Grantmakers’ board of directors.

Gary Yates, president and CEO, was selected as chairperson of the Southern California Association of Philanthropy’s board of directors. He also accepted a position on the Executive Management Committee of the Council on Foundations’ board of directors.
