TCWF Honors Recipients of 2007 Champions of Health Professions Diversity Award
The Foundation honored Drs. Michael V. Drake, Irvine; Hector Flores, Los Angeles; and Ernest C. Levister, Jr., San Bernardino, with its 2007 Champions of Health Professions Diversity Award on June 11. The honorees each received a cash award of $25,000. The awards were presented at a dinner held in conjunction with a two-day conference sponsored by TCWF that featured plenary speakers and breakout sessions for Foundation grantees and others working in this field. Visit www.tcwf.org to learn more about the honorees and this important health policy issue.
June is Declared “Make It In Scrubs Month” in California
State Sen. Mark Ridley-Thomas sponsored a resolution that named June “Make It In Scrubs” month. The declaration coincided with an informational hearing, held by the Assembly Health Committee on health workforce shortages and diversity on May 15, at which TCWF Program Director Saba Brelvi and representatives from eight TCWF grantees provided testimony on the extent of the problem in California and potential solutions. As part of the TCWF-funded public education campaign, implemented by Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide, June also saw the airing of television and radio commercials targeting California youth to promote health careers and outreach to journalists statewide encouraging local coverage of the issue.
TCWF Grantee Prevails in Landmark Court Case
Low-income residents of San Diego County whose incomes exceed a $1,078-per-month limit cannot be denied life-saving medical treatment, according to a May 23 state appellate court ruling. This major legal victory, won by the Western Center on Law and Poverty, rejects the income threshold because it denies care to the working poor. The ruling favors a class-action lawsuit filed in 2005 against the county and its County Medical Services program, which provides emergency treatment, trauma care, and treatment of chronic conditions to indigent adults with no other health coverage.
Coalition Launches Health Care Reform Campaign
“It’s OUR Healthcare!” – a new campaign created by a coalition of more than 50 organizations – will use an interactive website, satellite-linked town hall meetings, and person-to-person outreach to advocate for “quality, affordable health care for all Californians.” The campaign will enable the public to share stories and concerns with each other and with policymakers. Many TCWF grantees are members of the coalition, which includes consumer and health advocates, seniors, and labor and faith-based organizations
